Have you made your beauty resolutions?  

It feels like every year we make a list, check it twice, and get motivated to take better care of our skin. But by February, those best laid plans are usually overlooked. Life, work, kids, boyfriends tend to get in the way and we’re all just so busy (and sometimes lazy). 

Here are our 5 rules for making this year a great skin experience:

Debride your bathroom cabinet

You know those jars of cream, tubes or gels and bottles of lotion that are stuffed into your medicine cabinet and making it hard to find things in the morning? It’s a perfect time to get rid of anything you haven’t used in the last six months. If it is expired, ditch it. If you haven’t used it and it is still good, give it to a deserving friend. Keep only the best products that you love to use and work well for your skin type. P.S. Next, do the same for your makeup drawer. 

Invest in the perfect sun protection

Choose an SPF30 that does it all from a brand you can trust. Look for a high SPF, broad spectrum, with antioxidants, tinted if you prefer it, and a cream or lotion that glides on easily. Swear off sugar

Sugar is an enemy of good skin, and as you know, it can be found in just about everything you eat or drink. Avoid processed foods that are usually loaded with sugar, salt and fat and can make you look bloated and puffy. If you’re craving something sweet, try a bottle of coconut water, bite into a ripe peach or yellow apple, or snack on a handful of raisins, or a fruity sugar-free cup of Jello® instead. 

Cut down on alcohol & caffeine

Yes, we know there is resveratrol in red wine and coffee does offer antioxidant benefits too, but in general, too much wine and spirits, as well as overloading on coffee, tea and Diet Coke can wreak havoc on your good skin care habits. Alcohol and caffeine are very dehydrating. Let’s face it – no woman looks her best the morning after a night of binge drinking.

Get Eight Hours of Beauty Sleep

Sleep is a wonderful thing. But there is no one-size-fits-all answer when it comes to how much sleep you really need. If you don’t wake naturally without the benefit of an alarm ringing in your ears, you may not be getting enough sleep.  

How much sleep your body needs has to do with your genetics, age, gender, and lifestyle. Insomnia or restlessness is particularly common in women, which is no surprise. Men seem to sleep like babies and fall asleep so easily, while women toss and turn so much more. Hormones play a role too.  

If you don’t get enough sleep, you are at risk of experiencing high blood pressure, inflammation, weight gain, diabetes and heart disease. It can also greatly affect your mood, making you cranky and irritable. If you’re not careful, you may fall asleep at the wheel!

Consider how much caffeine you consumer and limit yourself to one or two cups per day, and none past 5 pm. You should also set your alarm clock 20 minutes earlier to be sure you awake on time to start your day. Try hot chamomile tea with honey to soothe you before bedtime, and turn off anything with an on/off switch with enough time to spare before your head hits the pillow.
