With so many face cleansers on the market, it’s difficult to know which one is best for you. How can you ensure that the cleanser you choose will work with your specific skin type to give you the best possible results and glow?
The great news is, whether your skin is dry, sensitive or currently battling an annoying bout of acne, there is an oil cleanser out there for you. If you have experienced disappointment with cleansers in the past, hopefully this will help clear things up.

What Are Cleansing Oils?

Contrary to what you might think, oil cleansers do not add to the problem of clogged pores - they actually assist in clearing them out while protecting our skin against free radicals. Cleansing oils work in harmony with the oils naturally produced by your skin to remove debris and bacteria build up. As the cleanser is massaged into your skin, dirt is loosened and washed away.

Though water-soluble (or oil-free) cleansers work well for many people, a vast majority of these seemingly harmless cleansers end up stripping your skin of the oils it produces on its own. This leaves skin dehydrated and can lead to premature signs of aging. Overall, cleansing oils are a gentle alternative that heal, protect, firm, soothe and hydrate your skin.

Which Oils Are Right For Your Skin Type?

The good the bad and the oily

We know it might sound odd to use an oil-based cleanser, especially if you have oily skin, but you might be surprised at the combinations counter-intuitive results. Oil cleansers will actually work with your natural oils to only pull debris away, while leaving your skin replenished, moisturized and hydrated. If your skin type tends to be oily, search for cleansers with grape seed, argan or peppermint oils such as Burt’s Bee’s Facial Cleansing Oil. Some doctors also recommend pairing an oil cleanser with botanical amino acids to help remove any excess sebum.

Left High and Dry

If your skin has trouble retaining moisture, oil cleansers are going to be your new best friend. This skin type can handle many types of oil cleansers, as they will restore a healthy level of hydration to your complexion. For dry skin types, seek out cleansers with neem, rose, olive or marula oils such as DHC’s Deep Cleansing Oil. These oils are rich in anti-oxidants and linoleic acid, as well as properties that will soften and nourish your skin.

A Beautiful Combination

For those with combination skin, look for oil cleansers that contain safflower oil like Josie Maran’s Argan Cleansing Oil. Jojoba oil and marula oils are also great for this skin type as they will balance your PH levels and reduce inflammation and breakouts while still restoring moisture.

The Sensitive Type

If you have sensitive skin, oil cleansers will be your saving grace. Look for a cleanser with an olive oil base such as Ciracle’s Absolute Deep Cleansing Oil. Cleansers like this work to soothe your skin and avoid any possible irritation. Other face oils that work are those with eucalyptus, lavender and chamomile oils within. These oils are anti-inflammatories, meaning they’ll help calm surface level wounds, redness and irritated skin.

Breaking Out of the Problem

As adult acne typically stems from changes with hormones, oil cleansers may or may not work to remedy your skin issue. However, cleansing oils do contain soothing properties that can calm breakouts and restore hydration to your skin. If you decide to try them out, look for oils like tea tree, jojoba and/or eucalyptus –these each work well for skin types that are typically resistant to Benzoyl Peroxide and prone to inflammation, redness, and breakouts. Cleansers with ingredients like glycerin and silicone are also less likely to clog pores.

No One Puts Baby in a Cleanser

One last note on our go-to oils and oils to stay away from. Baby oil might be a great makeup remover but it doesn’t’t work as a cleanser. It seals in moisture, but doesn’t’t allow the skin any breathing room, which blocks pores easily. On the flip side, you can’t go wrong with peppermint and olive oil. We’re big fans of these oils. They both intensely moisturize your skin and restore harmony and balance to your skin.
